“…but I play one on TV…”

Why do actors think being famous makes them any more qualified than the American public to have the answers to our political issues? Is it because they pretended they were a politician in a movie once? A more confusing question is this… why do people listen to them and think they are experts? Come on! In January of 2016 I had brain surgery. I SURE wouldn’t have let George Clooney do the surgery just because he was a doctor on ER!

Don’t get me wrong. I love to watch an actor do what they do best… act. They can act like they are teachers, or cops, or firemen, or even astronauts. They can act like anything. THIS DOESN’T QUALIFY THEM TO BE THOSE THINGS! They can study real hard and learn as much as they can about the part they are playing. They will probably know MUCH more about what they are playing than I do, but it still doesn’t qualify them to actually do it in the real world.

Now I’ve heard actors insult half the country because they think they know more about how everyone should vote than the “little people” in the middle of the country. Well I’ve got news for these actors… those “little people” actually know how to do something. A trade skill, a business specialty, or basically whatever it takes to put food on the table for their families. You, however, don’t know how to do ANYTHING except act like you are doing something. That’s it. You’ve proven nothing else to us.

Remember that last paragraph is not aimed at ALL actors, just those that insult and deride anyone disagreeing with their world-view. I know none of them will ever read this, but it’s aggravated me for years and I wanted to get it out there in the open to discuss.

Now finally I want to thank all of you other actors. You know… the ones that don’t try to insult us or ram your beliefs down our throats. You are the way actors should be, and trust me… the country thanks you for letting us enjoy your work without having to hear that we are stupid for not having the same political views that you have.

Hey! My nap is over!

Ok. First, I’d like to apologize for being away. It has been a trying couple of years, but I’m hoping to start regular updates here going forward. Thank you for all the prayers and well wishes I’ve received.

So Many Things Have Changed!

… and still so much remains the same.

There was once a time when being a rebel and protesting things were the actions of the “independent thinkers.” It hasn’t been that long ago that “you can’t tell me how to think” was a phrase used by those that thought for themselves and came to the decision that society was making the wrong choices. Now the “independent thinkers” are out there telling us that if we don’t agree with them and think the way THEY think, well, we’re evil people that don’t deserve to have ideas of our own. Can people not see how contradictory that is? “You can’t tell me what to think” has become “I can tell you what to think and if you DON’T agree with what I tell you then you are an evil person and shouldn’t be allowed to speak in public.”

Shoot… I’d love to see a movie retelling of the Rip Van Winkle story! That dude would go insane!

“That’s the way everyone else does it” used to be the reasoning for the actions of big business… now it’s the reasoning for the actions of protestors. “If you don’t do it the way WE do it, you are a trouble maker” used to be the attitude of big business… again… now it’s the attitude of the protestors.

Let’s pause for a second while I point out that not all people that disagree with me feel or act this way. Unlike some, I don’t bunch everyone into one group and label that group as one. I love a good discussion, and even a good debate every now and then. Who knows… I may be wrong MYSELF on some things. It has happened. I just wish people would think things through on their own and try to figure out what THEY believe instead of just clinging to the beliefs of the current crowd.

Here’s an exercise. Think about the following statement and question. Actually think about it. Keep an open mind. Work it out logically. Then post your opinion back here in a civil manner. I promise that if I don’t agree with you I won’t bad-mouth you or call you names or even question your intelligence. That’s not how discussion and debate should work. Ok… so here is the statement…

To stop mass shootings, we need to ban assault weapons.

Just a simple statement. I’m not saying I believe it or not… just stating what MANY people are saying. Now… here is the question…

Why does it make more sense to ban a certain type of weapon from all people than to ban ALL weapons from a certain type of people?

Again… concentrate on the question regarding the statement. Think about it and answer the question as your beliefs guide you.

Talk to ya later!

Yes, we still have heroes

During an interview Dick Winters, who you might have heard of from the HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers”, said one of his grandchildren asked him if he was a hero during World War II. He responded that he wasn’t, but he served in a company of heroes. There is a reason that his generation is known as “the greatest generation.” By any measure I can think of he was, in fact, a hero. The United States’ involvement in WWII was an experiment based on the idea that a trained civilian volunteer military could defeat a conscript “professional” military. It is a testament to the success of this experiment that, to this day, there are countries living in freedom that would not, otherwise, have that blessing… or if they did, they would have had a MUCH harder path to that freedom.

We will always owe a debt to those men and boys who fought in Europe and the Pacific, both those who survived and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to purchase those victories. These men, for the most part, were not men who chose to be warriors. Most were men who saw in our country something worth fighting for and volunteered to leave their jobs as farmers, taxi drivers, teachers and countless other jobs to become soldiers. This is why they volunteered. The feeling in the public at the time was so strong that many men who failed to meet the physical requirements and were rejected by the military actually committed suicide.

I say this is why they volunteered. I do not, however, feel this is why they fought. As the name of the miniseries implies, these men became as close, if not closer, than brothers. When the fighting actually started they fought not so much for their country, or for some political idea, as much as for their “brothers” that were fighting with them. Don’t get me wrong. I am not implying that they did not fight to defeat oppression and free conquered people… they did that. What I am saying is something more basic. Something more base, even. They fought because they knew that to fail did not simply mean they failed themselves, or even their country, but they failed the men fighting with them. The men that became brothers to them.

We all have “blood relatives”, but these men also gained their brotherhood by blood… not the blood of genetic ties, but the shared blood spilled by fellow soldiers and the blood spilled by the enemy as they did what was necessary to protect each other and achieve victory. These were heroes, not because of heroic deeds (although there were countless such), but because when the time came to engage the enemy, they fought through their fear to support each other and protect each other, no matter the cost to themselves.

These were soldiers who had full support of their military leadership, all the way up to the commander in chief. They were given a job, and they did it. I have never seen an interview with a WWII veteran where they said “yes, I was a hero.” Every one of them would state that they served with heroes, but were not heroes themselves, even if, as I said, they met every measure of being heroes themselves. To me, this gives credence to the idea that this was, indeed, the “greatest generation.”

Lately I heard someone say “there are no more heroes.”

To me, this is one of the most insulting statements I’ve ever heard, so I want to educate anyone who thinks that way. Our country is full of heroes. It is full of men and women who may have not had any genetic siblings die, but daily mourn “brothers” and “sisters” that are sometimes even closer than genetic siblings that have died in service to our country. If you think the pain of losing a genetic sibling is more painful, or causes more feelings of loss, then you really need to think about the situation. I have a brother and a sister who are both related to me genetically, but my brother has never had to rely upon me to fight a common enemy… he has never relied on me to protect his life while at the same time, he protected mine from that same enemy that was trying to kill us. I do not begrudge him the “brotherhood” he has with his fellow soldiers, and I never will.

Today, our soldiers fight just as bravely, just as heroically, as those soldiers of WWII. And I feel they fight for the same reasons… for their brothers and sisters fighting alongside them. They fight for their families back home. They fight evil where it is found, so they don’t have to fight it here at home where their genetic family lives. THEY ARE HEROES.

There is, however, an astounding difference in the situation today in the nation. Seventy years ago, our political leaders and commander in chief supported those soldiers. They committed to the task before them and, even though they knew the losses that we as a nation would incur, they supported the effort and allowed the soldiers to do what they were trained to do… achieve victory. The rules of engagement for our soldiers in WWII were simple… engage the enemy and destroy them. If someone had suggested to a paratrooper in the 82nd or 101st airborne that they could not fire upon the enemy unless they were themselves fired upon first, they would have laughed in their commander’s face. If you had told a private that landed on Utah beach and fought all the way to Germany that we were going to go ahead and give the country back to the Nazis, they would have thought you were joking. Imagine if we had actually done that… declared victory and then pulled all of our military completely out of Germany… how would the world look today?

When President Obama brags about getting the troops out of Iraq, he is insulting every American that died to liberate that country. Not only is it an insult to those that died, it is an insult to those who fought and lived. We had military in Germany for decades after the war, but people tend to forget that. We are now seeing the gains that were bought and paid for with the blood of our troops being given back to the extremists simply because our president is allowing it to happen.

Yes… I KNOW that the American people are tired of war and don’t want to have our soldiers on another battlefield. NO SANE PERSON WANTS WAR! We don’t want our men and women to go fight in the middle east any more than we wanted them to go fight in Europe and the Pacific, but it doesn’t matter what we WANT… it is a matter of honor and what has to be done. In WWI we pushed Germany back to their border and stopped, then had to fight them again a few decades later because we didn’t do it right the first time. The painful reality is that we DID do it right in Iraq. Whether you agreed with the war or not, you have to admit (as even the President has) that our troops had attained a stable environment in Iraq, just as we did in Germany. The difference is that we completely pulled out of Iraq instead of leaving troops in country as we did in Germany.

Look at the similarities in the two wars. Germany itself did not attack the homeland… ISIS has not attacked the homeland. Germany’s expansion was regional and didn’t directly affect the United States sovereignty… ISIS is a regional expansion, also, and does not (currently) affect the US sovereignty. Germany was invading and conquering nations… ISIS is also invading and conquering nations. Germany declared war on the United States… ISIS has ALSO declared war on the United States. There are more similarities, but these should suffice to get the point across. If we had left the same military infrastructure in Iraq as we did in Germany we would have a much different situation there than we have today.

Now lets get back to heroes. A “brother” that fell in the middle east was no less tragic and painful to his military brothers than one who fell at Bastogne, on Utah beach, or during Market Garden. If you are not familiar with these battles, please look them up, or, better yet, watch Band of Brothers. A hero is simply someone that puts the life of his fellow soldiers above his own life and moves to protect them with all possible means at his disposal up to, and including, laying down his life for them. This soldier is not doing this for his country, for the country in which he is fighting, or even for his commander in chief. He is doing it for the same reason that so many heroes did it during WWII… for his brothers in arms. Does he know fear? Yes, but he fights on anyway because to do less is to fail his brothers and sisters.

So yes… there are still heroes, and I count myself honored to know some of them, and I have seen the burdens of loss they carry every minute of every day for those lost that they counted as brothers…. brothers by blood, but not genetics.

I write this to let them know that they are known. They are honored. They are loved. And no matter what may happen in their lives in the future no one can take away from them that bond that has been fused in conflict and refined in the heat of battle. I pray that God will give them the peace that they deserve and that they have earned in “simply doing their duty”, and in closing, I would like each of them to know that I, for one, will never forget them for what they have sacrificed physically, mentally, and emotionally, and I also consider them heroes.

With Love and Respect,

Michael McGaha,

A Short Guide to ObamaCare

It’s football season, so let’s use a football game as an analogy.

It’s not fair that a large percentage of the crowd can afford to buy a T-Shirt supporting their team because let’s say the T-shirt cost $25.00.

The government decides that it is going to require by mandate that everyone get a T-Shirt whether they can afford it or not, or even whether they WANT one or not.

so if 70% of the 10,000 people at the game bought T-shirts that would cost $187,500.00. Pretty good for the T-shirt vendors. but if EVERYONE gets a T-shirt because the government requires it, then the cost for all of the T-shirts goes to $250,000. That leaves $62,000 that the T-shirt vendor loses because they are giving away 3000 t-shirts.

So what does the T-shirt vendor do? He raises the price of the T-Shirt to $36.00 so that he makes the same amount of money off the 7000 people who DO pay.

Now everyone gets a T-shirt and go home happy, right? Oh… except those people who had to pay $36.00 instead of $25.00 to get the same T-shirt that 30% of the people are getting free!

But what does the government do? They say that 10% of the people who can pay are exempt from this law. So they still get the T-Shirt at $25.00. This changes the equation a LOT… now 1000 people get the T-Shirt for $25.00, 3000 people get the T-shirt for free, and the remaining 6000 people have to pay $37.50.

And the government has the gall to say that the majority of the people will get T-shirts cheaper than before they passed this law?

This must be some of that new math. Because 60% of the people paying more so that 30% of the people can get it free, whether they want it or not, just doesn’t strike me as “most people will pay less for their T-Shirts.”

I’m pretty good at math, and other than the prices, amounts, and percentages, this scenario describes EXACTLY how ObamaCare works.

Oh… and if you don’t buy your T-Shirt, you get fined $5.00 which only pays for 20% of a T-shirt.

Open your eyes people! You cannot give 100% of the country something that 60-70% of the county was receiving before and expect it to cost less. I don’t know if it’s ignorance, incompetence, or just sheer stupidity. But it doesn’t add up.

Racism, Political Correctness, and Other Assorted Stupidity

WARNING & DISCLAIMER: In this post I may mention some “racially charged” terms. I am in NO WAY using them to describe anyone or label anyone with these terms. It is simply hard to discuss some aspects of racism without using the terms. Having said this, I hope I don’t offend anyone. Remember, This is a discussion. I will not refer to ANYONE (other than maybe myself) by a racial slur.

So. I sat and watched a montage of clips where liberals were saying the Tea Party was nothing but a bunch of racists. Some even said the Tea Party was a racist party. Now I’m not going discuss how many people in the Tea Party are racists, but I would like to know what percentage of a group has to be a certain thing before the whole group is considered that thing. Is it 10%? 25%? 50%? Technically it would have to be 100% for you to be able to call the group as a whole that, right? So the KKK would be considered a racist group because, face it… it IS a racist group.

But let’s not get that extreme. Let’s talk about everyday life and labels we as a country apply to groups of people. Let’s get the “N word” out of the way first. I personally believe that there is no excuse to use this word simply because of the history of HOW it was used… NOT what it “means”. The “N word” as a word is simply a bastardization of several languages’ words for “black.” in Spanish and Galician it’s “negro”, in Catalan it’s “negre”, in Esperanto it’s “nigra”… All of these are derived from the Latin word “nigrum” and they all simply describe a color. It has nothing to do with people. And even in the “pure” language form it is still an acceptable word. If it wasn’t would we have the United Negro College Fund? It’s when it was changed specifically to make it a hateful and derogatory term against an essentially helpless people that it became wrong. And in my opinion it doesn’t matter WHAT color you are, it should not be used.

It’s interesting how words get their meaning, isn’t it? Did you know that originally a “red neck” was a poor white farm worker that couldn’t find work anywhere except manual labor in the fields? Picking cotton, planting, plowing, whatever was available…. sometimes working side by side with freed slaves? They wore tough long sleeve work shirts and overalls and the only place they got sunburned was on the neck. Most of the time they were proud to have work, just like the blacks they worked beside were proud to have work. Remember, this was a rough time in the south. Today, we ALL know what a redneck is…. you hear it and think mullets, house trailers, 4x4s, and cases of beer every weekend. But usually the TRUE rednecks still work hard at jobs that, while much better than the original “rednecks”, is still considered lower class. Remember, I’m speaking in general here and while I’ve been called a redneck before, I’m technically a hillbilly, which is a totally different post so we’ll leave it for later.

So let’s get to a VERY misunderstood term. I would be willing to bet that 90% of the people using the term and even the people being CALLED this term do not understand where the word comes from. Before we talk about the word itself, let’s talk abut the cowboys that still have farms in central Florida. Unlike what we normally think of when we picture western cowboys, they don’t use dogs to herd the cattle. They ride their horses and they carry whips. When they want the cows to change direction they crack the whips so the cows shy away from the noise and go the right direction. Locally in central Florida they are known, not as “cowboys”, but as “crackers”. Let’s go back several decades… on most farms utilizing slave labor they ALSO had someone on a horse carrying a whip… and although they might be called “foreman” or “boss”, the slang for this person was “cracker.” Personally, I find it extremely offensive to be called a cracker. When someone does that they are inferring that I am so racist that I would be the one on the horse whipping the slaves.

Now, if you are still reading, and I haven’t offended you, I’d like to make some suggestions and statements.

First… AS LONG AS WE CONTINUE TO CALL THEM “RACES” SOMEONE IS GOING TO TRY TO WIN!

Second… Let’s just quit referring to ourselves as Irish Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans (Although that one almost makes sense), and start calling ourselves AMERICANS. Let’s stop calling ourselves White, Black, Hispanic, etc. and just call ourselves PEOPLE. Is that asking too much?

Ok… now the Political Correctness and Other Assorted Stupidity. Recently I posted the following on Facebook while I was working and copying some files…

You can’t legislate morality
You can’t legislate common sense
You can’t legislate work ethic

I am so tired of hearing that the rich must pay their “fair share” that I want to puke. Let me put this into perspective…

1: At the end of the school year let’s take 40% of the grade point away from the top 10% of the student body and give it to the bottom 50% of the student body. After all, it’s not fair that only the ones that are the smartest and work the hardest get all the good grades.

2: At the end of the season let’s take 40% of the wins away from the top 10% of the college football team and give those wins to the bottom 50% of the teams.

3: Let’s take 40% of the stock shares away from the richest 10% and give them to the poorest half of the country. After all, they should be able to have stock, too.

4: While we’re at it, let’s take 40% of the land away from the wealthy land owners and redistribute it.

5: And while we’re talking about fair… I want to be in the Olympics, so let’s figure out a way that only have to run the 500m race while the athletes that worked and trained so long run the 1000m race. I’m slow and overweight, so it’s only fair that I get special treatment.

6: There is no number 6

7: Let’s redistribute the credit scores. Let’s take points away from those people who have worked to pay their bills on time and have built up a good credit score and give those points to the people that don’t make their payments and have bad credit.

OR…. since you CAN’T regulate Morality, Common Sense, or Work Ethic. Let’s try this…

1: If a child has a failing grade, call it what it is. If they are special needs, get them help. If they are lazy, make them take the grade over again. Maybe a little embarrassment from being held back will motivate them!

2: Well, that’s just silly. But it does make a good point.

3: Hey… we’re already doing #3 in a different way… we’re making rich people pay a MUCH higher percentage of their income in taxes and then giving it to tens of millions of people. Why don’t we quit doing that! Let’s require the unemployed to prove they are trying to get a job before we get them a single check. Let’s also take the billions we spend totally supporting them and set up vocational/technical schools to teach them a new skill. Require that after a certain time on unemployment or you forfeit your checks.

4: OK… forget that one too, again… it was just silly.

5: LIFE ISN’T FAIR! You don’t get a trophy from your boss for failing an assignment “just because you participated!” Quit training our kids to expect the real world to work that way. I knew before I was out of grade school that the world was one huge competition after another. If you want to win… or at least not lose all the time… you had to work hard and get better at what you did. And you weren’t give respect until you earned it!

6: There’s not a number 6, remember?

and finally:

7: If you’ve got bad credit because you over-extended yourself and lived beyond your means… well… STOP DOING THAT! Either that or you can always vote Democrat and hope the country doesn’t run out of money before you die. I wouldn’t bet on it, though, if we continue to be ran by a man that thinks you can fill up a swimming pool by taking water out of the deep in and pouring it into the shallow end.

To sum up: Why did I write all this? It’s simple. I’m copying a huge file up to the server and it’s taking a while and I got bored. So all I ask is…
1: Share this. Spread the word and see if people will read it
2: Quit passing laws that protect people from themselves
3: Sorry… the file just finished copying. I’ll talk to everyone later…. bye.

One of the things I (sarcastically) suggested was this…

5: And while we’re talking about fair… I want to be in the Olympics, so let’s figure out a way that only have to run the 500m race while the athletes that worked and trained so long run the 1000m race. I’m slow and overweight, so it’s only fair that I get special treatment.

Imagine my surprise when I see the following headline on the news tonight…

A California youth football league is fining teams if they win by more than a certain margin

Yes, you read it right. They are fining the coach $200.00 if his team wins by more than a certain margin. This is supposed to promote sportsmanship. My NON-sarcastic response in my post was…

OK… So I didn’t nail it completely but I ALSO said…

2: At the end of the season let’s take 40% of the wins away from the top 10% of the college football team and give those wins to the bottom 50% of the teams.

If you add the two together, you’d think the California Athletic Association was reading my Facebook posts!

Welp… I’m finished now, Hope I didn’t offend you, but I’m not going to lose sleep over it. If you are the type that wants to be offended, you’ll find something up there to offend you. Trust me, I’ve had plenty of reasons to be offended over the years. It doesn’t pay. Usually the person that offends me doesn’t even know it, so the only person it affects is me. If you know me at all, you know I’m not the type to want to offend people, but I AM the type that doesn’t mind sharing my beliefs and opinions. Hopefully some of you will comment on this TASTEFULLY and RESPECTFULLY. I hope I showed taste and respect while discussing some touchy subjects, so please do the same if you reply.

“You should reject those voices.” – Barack Obama

President Barack Obama spoke about the importance of citizenship in his commencement address at Ohio State University on May 5, 2013 asking the class of 2013 to participate and persevere in their defense of democracy.

“I think it’s fair to say our democracy isn’t working as well as we know it can. It could do better.”

Ok.. let’s stop right there… should we REALLY have to explain to the President what type of government we have? We’ll take that up in a later post, though, so let’s move along.

“So briefly, I’ll ask for two things from the Class of 2013: to participate, and to persevere. After all, your democracy does not function without your active participation. At a bare minimum, that means voting, eagerly and often — not having somebody drag you to it at 11:30 a.m. when you’re having breakfast. (Laughter.) It means knowing who’s been elected to make decisions on your behalf, and what they believe in, and whether or not they delivered on what they said they would.” –

Could we PLEASE hold the president to this standard? After all, HE was the one that said it!

“That’s how our political system gets consumed by small things when we are a people called to do great things — like rebuild a middle class, and reverse the rise of inequality, and repair the deteriorating climate that threatens everything we plan to leave for our kids and our grandkids.”

We’re not a democracy… we’re not a socialist country either. OK… I’ll quit interrupting and let him speak.

” And, yes, we still face many important challenges.”

“To repair the middle class, to give more families a fair shake, to reject a country in which only a lucky few prosper because that’s antithetical to our ideals and our democracy”

“To educate more children at a younger age, and to reform our high schools for a new time, and to give more young people the chance to earn the kind of education that you did at The Ohio State University, and to make it more affordable so young people don’t leave with a mountain of debt”

“To build better roads and airports and faster Internet, and to advance the kinds of basic research and technology that’s always kept America ahead of everybody else”

“To confront the threat of climate change before it’s too late”

“To protect more of our kids from the horrors of gun violence”

“Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems; some of these same voices also doing their best to gum up the works. They’ll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices.”

REALLY?!?!? Did I just hear that right?

Ok. from here on out it’s just my opinion and my voice. While many things in this address bothered me, the final paragraph took the prize. It shows EXACTLY how the liberal progressive movement works. If you disagree with what they believe, they reject you. You don’t even have the right to voice your opinion.

This is from the mouth of President Obama. I didn’t spin it. I didn’t take it out of context. He actually said that the voices that are warning that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner should be rejected. I say that tyranny STARTS when the leaders begin silencing any opposition! President Obama’s administration is a perfect example of this. Does your group oppose the liberal agenda? Let’s turn the IRS on them! Are you reporting something we don’t like? Let’s turn the DOJ on you! Are you burning the American flag in your country and giving arms and support to Muslim extremists? Let’s give them some money!

It is a sad day in this country when the leader of the free world is more concerned with attacking Americans who legitimately disagree with him, than with protecting Americans serving our country around the world. In his eyes there is more danger from Fox News than there is from radical Islam.

I don’t guess any of this matters though. After all… I’m just another one of those voices you should reject.

I Blame Leaded Gasoline!

There is a marked lack of basic logic shown by the leaders of our country.

I thought I should make that bold, because I truly believe that it is at the root of the majority of our problems in this country. You may be thinking “what does that have to do with leaded gasoline?”… We’ll get to that in a bit. Let’s define the problem first.

Problem: Extremist Muslims believe everyone that do not believe the way they do are infidels and they are given a holy commandment to kill them or convert them.

Faulty Logic: Let’s ignore the REAL reason they attack us because if we appease them and show them that we like them, they’ll quit attacking us. So let’s not offend them and they’ll be happy and leave us alone.

Reality: It doesn’t matter how nice we are to them, we can no easier get Extremist Muslims on our side by being nice to them than we can get the Westboro Baptist Church to quit protesting military funerals by being nice to them. These people feel that they are doing God’s will and are not going to change just because you try not to offend them. Our leaders don’t seem to understand that us existing and not believing the same as they believe offends them!

Problem: There is a growing problem with bullying, drug and alcohol use, and other criminal activity among the youth of our country.

Faulty Logic: Kids need to be respected and treated as friends and equals by their parents and teachers. Besides anything other than positive reinforcement is abuse.

Reality: Kids are stupid. I know… I used to be one! And I was stupid! Now please understand me… I’m not advocating that you beat your children with bats, but a correctly administered spanking can do wonders in the raising of a child. A lot of people today do not seem to be aware of the pain/reward balance that contributes to good behavior. Every child subconsciously weighs that pain/reward balance before every action. “Is the pain from the punishment I will receive if I get caught greater than the enjoyment I will get out of doing this?” I can tell you that a lot of time I didn’t compute that ratio correctly… and it hurt when I got caught. That refined my behavior. Life says some actions will cause pain… it is ridiculous to pretend that isn’t true and very effective. (By the way… if the Extremists from the problem above were shown a more appropriate pain to reward ratio they might quit some of THEIR actions also.)

Problem: Our economy is really bad!

Faulty Logic: Lets take money from the rich people and give it to the poor people. That will help the economy improve.

Reality: Well… pretty much what I said up there about the pain/reward ratio, but in reverse. When people learn that they can live an acceptable lifestyle without working, they have no incentive to work. You know what really scares me? The unemployment rate is going down a bit as a percentage of the population but you hear the reporters say “there are twice that number if you count those people who have quit looking for work.” Wake up! This means that for every person that is getting unemployment insurance and looking for work, there is someone who has quit looking for work and is being supported by the welfare system. Taking money from the rich and giving it to the poor to help the economy is like trying to fill up your swimming pool by taking buckets of water out of the deep end and pouring it into the shallow end. The government does not create new money… it just spends money that it has taken from it’s citizens.

Ok… there are three examples of a failure to comprehend basic logic. Now don’t get me wrong… I’m not saying that welfare is a bad thing… I am saying that a welfare system that can be abused as easily as our welfare system can be IS a bad thing. Sometimes people need help… but helping someone is totally different than supporting them. And I know that all Muslims aren’t extremists… that’s why I threw the Westboro kooks in the same concept. I’m a Baptist, by the way, and it embarrasses me that those people call themselves Baptists.

Now… what does all of this have to do with leaded gasoline? In 1921 tetraethyl lead (TEL) was patented by General Motors and they began using it in gasoline as an anti-knock agent. In 1924 several workers died and went crazy while working at the TEL production facility. After years of controversy and testing it was found in the 1970s that higher levels of lead in the blood correlated with poor school performance. After the Clean Air Act Extension of 1970 (and subsequent appeals) leaded gasoline began to be phased out in 1979 and was finally completely phased out for passenger car use by 1986. A 1994 study showed that the concentration of lead in the blood level of U.S. population had dropped 78% from 1976 to 1991. The program I watched made the statement that the average intelligence of children today, as measured by IQ tests, is 10 to 20 points higher than the children raised during the 60s and 70s.

Now I might not be the smartest person around, but I can figure some things out. Most of these politicians grew up in the larger cities sniffing leaded gasoline fumes! No wonder they have a problem with logic…. they’ve all got lead poisoning!

Government Spending

Let’s jump right into politics! I saw something very disturbing in the last couple of days. Two items that really made me stop and scratch my head. One was a government program that was looking into infertility problems with same sex couples. Another was a government program to study how voice changes effect transgendered individuals’ self esteem. Now both of these items were given a LOT of money from the government (read “our tax money”). So I started looking around trying to verify this and I couldn’t do it. What I DID find was a list of government programs that, frankly, makes me sick at my stomach that I am having to pay for. I’m just going to list a few of them here with some quick comments on them.

  • Protecting a Michigan insect collection from other insects ($187,632) <- Really? a collection? Not even live insects?
  • Developing a program to develop “machine-generated humor” in Illinois ($712,883) <- You’ve got to be kidding me. Do we REALLY want our computers pulling pranks and cracking jokes?
  • Studying why deleting a gene can create sex reversal in people, but not in mice  in Minnesota ($190,000) <- ok… do we really have a lot of mice wanting to reverse their gender?
  • New jumbo recycling bins with microchips embedded inside to track participation  in Ohio ($500,000) <- Why don’t we have people who’ve learned “empty” from “full” to work collecting the recycling? Half a million dollars for “Smart Trash Cans”?
  • 18 North Carolina teacher coaches to heighten math and reading performance ($4.4  million) <- If they can’t do the job, fire them and hire someone who can! Don’t spend millions on people that should have learned this BEFORE they got their degree!
  • Retrofitting light switches with motion sensors for one company in Arizona  ($800,000) <- I have no comment. That’s just stupid… and WE PAID FOR IT!
  • Removing graffiti along 100 miles of flood-control ditches in California  ($837,000) <- hey… save the money and put the people serving community service out doing it!
  • Producing and transporting peanuts and peanut butter in North Carolina  ($900,000) <- Ok… these are getting too stupid for comment… I’m just going to list the rest of them without comment.
  • Elevating and relocating 3,000 feet of track for the Napa Valley Wine Train in  California ($54 million)
  • Professors and employees of Iowa state universities voluntarily taking early  retirement ($43 million)
  • Missouri bridge project that already was full-funded with state money ($8  million)
  • University in Oklahoma sending 3 researchers to Alaska to study grandparents and  how they pass on knowledge to younger generations ($1.5 million)
  • Bridge built over railroad crossing so 168 Nebraska town residents don’t have to  wait for the trains to pass ($7 million)
  • Beautification of Los Angeles’ Sunset Boulevard ($1.1 million)
  • New spring training facilities for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies  ($30 million)
  • Putting free WiFi, Internet kiosks and interactive history lessons in 2 Texas  rest stops ($13.8 million)
  • Road signs touting stimulus funds at work in Ohio ($1 million)
  • Researching how paying attention improves performance of difficult tasks in  Connecticut ($850,000)
  • Fire station without firefighters in Nevada ($2 million)

Ok. That’s just from one list I found from the 2010 budget and this doesn’t even touch things like the national endowment for the arts. Listen… if you are an artist and you can’t sell your art… go get a REAL job and do your art as a hobby. I don’t see a “national endowment for the web developer” anywhere!

Now being serious, a lot of the things I found are not necessarily bad things. But they ARE bad when our tax money has to pay for them. And for Pete’s sake, get it right… welfare is NOT an “entitlement,” its a program for giving you something you’ve not earned. Social Security IS an entitlement because you paid into it your whole life and you are ENTITLED to it. These seem to be very small numbers compared to our debt, but this is just a short sampling. There are THOUSANDS of these stupid programs out there.

Don’t take my statements to mean I am cold or heartless, but there is a difference between giving a hand up and giving a hand out. PBS and NPR are another couple of things that need to be axed, in my opinion. They are always doing telethons to raise money for PBS, but still get money from the government. If they can’t pay their way, they should restructure, or close the door. I actually had a liberal friend tell me one time that it should be a crime for sports figures and entertainers to make more than $100,000 per year. She said that anything over that should be taken from them and given to the poor.

So all men are created equal? That might be so, but their situations are certainly not equal. Let’s not kid ourselves, some people have it easier than others. Some are even smarter than others! That’s not fair! Well, folks, no one ever said life was fair.

Now I don’t believe in ranting about stuff without giving a solution. It might not be perfect, but I won’t be one of those people that whines and complains without suggesting changes, so here goes…

Let’s throw out the whole tax code. Now bring in a new flat rate tax that only starts at a minimum yearly income. Let’s call that, for ease of computation, $20,000. So as long as you don’t make more than $20,000 you won’t pay a dime in taxes. At $20,001 a flat rate of 10% kicks in and there are no deductions. It’s pulled out and placed in an escrow account with every paycheck. Now comes the fun part… when you fill out your taxes you just put your income, and then you have the option of checking a box that says “[ ] Let the government disburse my taxes”, or a box that says “[ ] Use my taxes for the following” then list every program that receives government money. Those that don’t want their money going for  “Studying why deleting a gene can create sex reversal in people, but not in mice  in Minnesota” can leave that unchecked and not a penny of their money will go toward that program. TADA! A democratic way for everyone to “vote” on what government programs get money. Remember… I’m not talking about Social Security, that’s an entitlement, not a hand-out. I wouldn’t even mind a three or four tiered rate system… like 2.5% for incomes from $20,000 – $40,000 leading up to the 10% rate on anyone earning over $100,000. Anyway, explain to me why this wouldn’t be fair? Because it would put all those tax attorneys out of business?

Let the Counter-Point and Discussion Begin!

Welcome & Introduction

intro…

I would like to start by explaining the “Mountain Top” part of my blog title. I don’t imagine myself a “guru” or some wise man sitting on the top of a mountain delivering wisdom to those who take the time to climb the heights and listen. It is much simpler than that, but I really need to fill in some back story to really get the idea across.

some back story…

Having been raised in a small town in Arkansas, and living the majority of my life in that same small town, I was imprinted early with certain “facts” that have shaped my philosophy and determined my basic outlook in life. At the same time these values were being built into my personality I fell in love with technology. For close to three decades I have been working in some area of computing or another, and most of those years I worked for myself. Needless to say when on a conference call with potential clients I have a built-in handicap that must be overcome… and that’s my marked southern accent. So one day my phone rings and I notice it is one of my service clients calling. This particular client just loved to poke fun at my accent, so I decided to have some fun and answered the phone “Hillbilly Programmin’! How can I hep ya?” After about 20 seconds of silence I hear about 6 people burst into laughter. The client was calling to add me into a conference call with AT&T because AT&T was interested in using my software to do the fulfillment for their “Friends & Family” referral program. We did actually land the contract, but to this day there are people who were on that call (including at least two vice presidents) that know me as either the “Mountain Man” or the “Hillbilly Programmer.” I am just an ordinary guy with some things I want to say, and since I’ve been called a Hillbilly I thought the title would be a nice play on the idea.

keep reading… I’m getting to the point… like “who am I?”

I would like to think I’m an intelligent person, and the tests I took in school used to tell me that this was true, but tests don’t mean a lot and life has a way of quickly showing you just how stupid you are when you get thrown into the real world thinking you know it all. I am a conservative Christian, the husband of a VERY tolerant wife, and the father of two amazing young men. In my life I’ve worked in factories, I’ve worked construction, and, while running my own businesses, have worked for some of the largest companies in the world. During all of this, though, the best compliment I ever received from any client or employer was when I was told I had the best work ethic of anyone they had ever had work for them. This takes us back to the previous idea of early development. If someone asked me what single thing that my father taught me that has had the most influence on my life it would be “give a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.” He always told me that if I didn’t do that it was the same as theft… I might as well be stealing money from my employer/client. That’s enough about me for now. Trust me, if you follow these posts for long, you’ll learn a lot more about me in the future.

so… just what is this blog going to be about?

That’s a good question! I really don’t know. I’ve spoken with a friend of mine who has agreed to post “counter-points” to my ramblings. I don’t want this to become just another “right-wing rant” blog. This friend of mine can introduce himself (if he is still wanting to give this a go), but I will tell you that while I am primarily a conservative he is primarily a liberal and while I am a Christian (or attempt to be one), he is… well… I’ll let him explain it. I personally think he falls into the agnostic camp, but I’m sure he will correct me. A lot of you probably know him, so when Tom Black posts on here, everyone welcome him.

are you going to allow comments and, if so, what are the rules?

Yes, we’re going to allow comments. The rules are simple… be civil, be respectful, and don’t attack other people because of their beliefs or their stands on a particular subject. If you aren’t capable of intelligently DISCUSSING your position on a subject without resorting to attacks, then frankly we don’t want to hear from you. We are going to be discussing everything from politics to science to religion. Everyone is welcome to comment, but by commenting you accept the fact that if you ARE disrespectful or attack other people your post will most likely be deleted with no notice and no explanation. I would also ask you to keep the language down to a PG rating. Again… you should be able to get your point across without resorting to foul language.

so… what now?

Introductions and Ideas. Introduce yourself and let us know what topics you would like to discuss. We’re going to try to put up a post every week at first. We may change to more or less frequently after we get a feel of how things are going, but I think that weekly is a good start. I’ve already got some topics lined up I want to discuss such as Gun Control, Immigration, Universal Registration, The Tax System, and many more, but I really want to hear from you., so spread the word that we’re out here and start letting us know what you want to discuss.

Thanks, Michael McGaha
